No Fears, No Tears - 13 Years Later
By Leora Kuttner, PhD
Thirteen years ago, the award-winning No Fears, No Tears documented how eight children with cancer, aged three to twelve years old, got through painful medical treatments with the therapeutic support of clinical psychologist, Leora Kuttner. Through the moving stories of these courageous youngsters, the video showed the strength of the human spirit, and the mind's natural ability to ease even excruciating physical pain.
In No Fears, No Tears-13 Years Later, Kuttner revisits seven of the same children thirteen years later, to explore the long-term impact of having learned as a child how to deal with fear and pain. These now young adults still vividly recollect their painful childhood experiences, but they also describe how learning to master the pain has affected their lives today. Their stories dramatically challenge prevailing myths about childhood pain, powerfully demonstrating the power of hypnosis, imagery, breathing and distraction, and proving that children can learn to actively help themselves through taxing medical treatment.

Reviews
"A powerful film, especially for pediatricians and pediatric nurses who have experienced the lonely task of inflicting pain in the service of preserving life. A must for all pediatric physicians, nurses, and clinicians in training who work with sick children." Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics
"It is rare that professionals and parents are permitted to hear from survivors on such a personal level. This video is an exquisite resource, and should be carefully viewed by professionals, parents, and children with cancer." Eleanor G. Pask, MScN, EdD, Childhood Cancer Foundation
"Mind-body techniques for managing pain are important but often neglected interventions. This video not only discusses specific techniques, but from the voices of patients we learn the living reality of how proper pain management affects quality of life." Donna L. Wong, PhD, RN, PNP, CPN, FAAN
"The material presented in these films demonstrates the power of teaching children to take an active role in coping with pain. It also shows the long-term impact of pain experiences in the young and the importance of taking those issues seriously. These videos would be useful additions to hospital libraries for patients and staff alike." Gary A. Walco, PhD, The David Center for Children's Pain and Palliative Care, UMDNJ
