photo Serving Crime Victims with Disabilities
Meet Us Where We Are
By Robyn Gonzalez Mercurio
Video Action Fund
Support from The Office for Victims of Crime, US Department of Justice

This vitally important video focuses on meeting the needs of people with physical and developmental disabilities who have been victims of crime - a problem that has been seriously under-reported, even sometimes ignored by government and community agencies.

In Meet Us Where We Are, we hear the stories of crime victims themselves: how they were victimized first by their attackers or abusers and, in too many cases, victimized again by an insensitive criminal justice system. But we also learn about support services and organizations that have been created to help. This program is intended to educate people with disabilities about their rights and, maybe more importantly, to let them know that they to not have to go through their experience alone. It offers organizations in the disability community a valuable introduction to the kinds of services and assistance their members have a right to expect.

While Meet Us Where We Are is intended for individuals and groups in the disability community, as well as the general public, its companion film, The Time is Now is aimed at professionals and volunteers who counsel and advocate for crime victims. For a combined offer on both films, click here
